Not only the right consonant, the right the syllable and origin. :) The "vin" in vintage really comes from "wine" in latin. So really it's the same word as it is in those other languages (eg. vendage etc)... just spoken a little differently over time.

Its funny that in english we've adopted the word for so many other meanings like age, year, antiques, etc! :)

Anyway sounds like you're having a great time, have lots of fun!!

Cheers

Drew, I do believe you are right! I have never heard that word used in that context, and vintage is a lovely word, full of romance and substance and also starting with the correct consonant. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and research and I stand corrected! English is not so bad after all and actually we english speakers do make excellent wines too.

"vindima, vendange, vendemmia… grape picking. Obviously wine-making is far less important in english-speaking cultures – we don’t even start the season with a sexy name!".

I'm pretty certain the english name is "Vintage". :)

Ssshhhh! Don't spoil the romance, Isabel! Did I say my neighbours should be winning awards for their wine-making? No, I said the wine is free. Did I say that I'll be trying to make my morangueira drinkable? You have to have something to cook the chanfana with! (goat & red wine stew, people, very typical of these parts)

"The predominant grape here is Morangeira, there’s a bluer grape they call Tinta and there are white grapes they call Branco. (Imaginative names (not) and are probably in village language not real portuguese). They mix everything in together. "
